Verse 1 of 5

If You Knew How Near

ਭੈਰਉ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
bhairo mehlaa 5.
Bhairao, Fifth Mehl:
ਨਿਕਟਿ ਬੁਝੈ ਸੋ ਬੁਰਾ ਕਿਉ ਕਰੈ ॥
nikat bujhai so buraa ki-o karai.
How can anyone do evil, if he realizes that the Lord is near?
ਬਿਖੁ ਸੰਚੈ ਨਿਤ ਡਰਤਾ ਫਿਰੈ ॥
bikh sanchai nit dartaa firai.
One who gathers corruption, constantly feels fear.
ਹੈ ਨਿਕਟੇ ਅਰੁ ਭੇਦੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
hai niktay ar bhayd na paa-i-aa.
He is near, but this mystery is not understood.
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਭ ਮੋਹੀ ਮਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
bin satgur sabh mohee maa-i-aa. ||1||
Without the True Guru, all are enticed by Maya. ||1||

In plain words

If you understand that the One is near, how could you do wrong?

Someone who piles up what is harmful walks around afraid, all the time.

The One is near, and still they have not found this secret.

Without the True Guru, everyone is caught by Maya, the pull of the shiny world.

Feel how near the One is, and unkindness becomes hard to do.
The deeper layer

When you feel how near the One is, doing wrong loses its pull.

Nikat bujhai so buraa ki-o karai: one who understands the One is near, how could they do harm? Bikh sanchai nit dartaa firai: gathering bikh, poison, a person goes about always afraid. Bhaid is the secret: the One is close, and still unseen. Maa-i-aa is the pull of the world's glitter, and without the Guru everyone is caught in it.

A Question to Sit With

How might you act differently if you felt watched over, in a good way?
