Nearer Than Near

ਨੇੜੈ ਨੇੜੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਕਹੈ ॥
nayrhai nayrhai sabh ko kahai.
Everyone says that He is near, near at hand.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭੇਦੁ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਕੋ ਲਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gurmukh bhayd virlaa ko lahai. ||1|| rahaa-o.
But rare is that person, who, as Gurmukh, understands this mystery. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Everyone says, "Near, the One is near, right at hand."

But rare is the one who turns to the Guru and understands this secret.

Everyone says the One is near; few feel how near.
The deeper layer

Everyone says the One is near, and only a few, turned toward the Guru, come to know it.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the centre of the shabad. Nayrhai nayrhai sabh ko kahai: near, near, everyone says. Gurmukh bhaid virlaa ko lahai: rare is the one who, as a gurmukh (someone turned toward the Guru), grasps the secret. Saying and knowing are different depths.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you know in your head but do not yet feel in your heart?
