Looking In The Wrong Houses

nikat na daykhai par garihi jaa-ay.
The mortal does not see the Lord near at hand; instead, he goes to the homes of others.
darab hirai mithi-aa kar khaa-ay.
He steals their wealth and lives in falsehood.
pa-ee thag-uree har sang na jaani-aa.
Under the influence of the drug of illusion, he does not know that the Lord is with him.
baajh guroo hai bharam bhulaani-aa. ||2||
Without the Guru, he is confused and deluded by doubt. ||2||

In plain words

They do not see the One near at hand, and go into other people's homes instead.

They take what belongs to others and live on lies.

A trickster's spell has fallen on them, and they do not know that the One is with them.

Without the Guru, they are lost and confused by doubt.

Not feeling the One near, we go searching in all the wrong places.
The deeper layer

Missing the One who is right beside you, it is easy to go reaching into other people's lives for what is theirs.

Nikat na daykhai par garihi jaa-ay: not seeing the near One, a person goes to others' homes. Darab hirai: they take others' wealth. Thag-uree is the drug a trickster slips to a traveller on the road, a spell that makes you forget the One is right beside you. Without the Guru, one is bharam bhulaani-aa, lost in doubt.

A Question to Sit With

When have you searched everywhere for something that was right in front of you?
