Sikhism·Raag Bhairao·Shabad 52
Verse 4 of 5

The Treasure Is Inside

ਨਿਕਟਿ ਨ ਜਾਨੈ ਬੋਲੈ ਕੂੜੁ ॥
nikat na jaanai bolai koorh.
Not understanding that the Lord is near, he tells lies.
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਮੂਠਾ ਹੈ ਮੂੜੁ ॥
maa-i-aa mohi moothaa hai moorh.
In love and attachment to Maya, the fool is plundered.
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਵਸਤੁ ਦਿਸੰਤਰਿ ਜਾਇ ॥
antar vasat disantar jaa-ay.
That which he seeks is within his own self, but he looks for it outside.
ਬਾਝੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੈ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਇ ॥੩॥
baajh guroo hai bharam bhulaa-ay. ||3||
Without the Guru, he is confused and deluded by doubt. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Not knowing the One is near, they tell lies.

Tangled in love of Maya, the shiny world, the foolish one is robbed.

What they are looking for is inside them, yet they go searching for it in far-off places.

Without the Guru, they are lost and confused by doubt.

What you are searching for is already inside you.
The deeper layer

What you are looking for is already inside you.

Nikat na jaanai bolai koorh: not knowing the One is near, a person tells lies. Maa-i-aa mohi moothaa: robbed by clinging to Maya, the shiny world. Antar vasat disantar jaa-ay: the treasure is inside, yet they travel to distant places to find it. The refrain comes back: without the Guru, lost in doubt.

A Question to Sit With

What good thing might already be inside you, waiting to be noticed?
