When The Shutters Open

One whose good karma is recorded on his forehead

Within his own being and beyond, he sees the Lord near at hand.

O servant Nanak, he does not come and go in reincarnation. ||4||3||16||

In plain words

The one whose forehead carries the writing of good karma serves the True Guru, and the hard, heavy doors of the mind swing wide open.

Inside and outside, they see the One near at hand.

Nanak, the servant, says: such a one no longer comes and goes from one life to the next.

When the shutters open, you see the One had always been near.
The deeper layer

When the heavy doors of the mind open, you see the One near, inside and out.

Jis mastak karam likhi-aa lilaat: the one with karam written on the forehead. Karam can mean the fruit of what you have done, and it can also mean grace, a gift. Satgur sayvay khulhay kapaat: serving the True Guru, the heavy shutters open. Antar baahar niktay so-ay: the One is near, within and without. And then the coming and going ends.

A Question to Sit With

What helps the shutters open so you can see what was always there?
