No One Can Harm What You Keep

ਭੈਰਉ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥

Bhairao, Fifth Mehl:
ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਤਿਸੁ ਕਉਨੁ ਮਾਰੈ ॥
jis too raakhahi tis ka-un maarai.
Who can kill that person whom You protect, O Lord?
ਸਭ ਤੁਝ ਹੀ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਗਲ ਸੰਸਾਰੈ ॥
sabh tujh hee antar sagal sansaarai.
All beings, and the entire universe, is within You.
ਕੋਟਿ ਉਪਾਵ ਚਿਤਵਤ ਹੈ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ॥
kot upaav chitvat hai paraanee.
The mortal thinks up millions of plans,
ਸੋ ਹੋਵੈ ਜਿ ਕਰੈ ਚੋਜ ਵਿਡਾਣੀ ॥੧॥
so hovai je karai choj vidaanee. ||1||
but that alone happens, which the Lord of wondrous plays does. ||1||

In plain words

The one You protect, who can destroy?

All beings, the whole universe, are inside You.

A person thinks up millions of plans, and what happens is what the One of wondrous play does.

When something larger is holding you, fear loses its grip.
The deeper layer

When the One is keeping you safe, nothing can reach you.

Guru Arjan asks, jis too raakhahi tis ka-un maarai: "whom You protect, who can destroy?" Then sabh tujh hee antar sagal sansaarai: "all beings, the whole world, are held inside You."

Next he looks at our planning. Kot upaav chitvat hai paraanee means "a person thinks up millions of plans." And so hovai je karai choj vidaanee: "what happens is what the One of wonderful play does." Choj vidaanee means wondrous play.

This points to Hukam, the flow of life, moving like the current of a river. Think of doing your best on a school project and then handing it in. You can do your best and then rest, because the outcome is held by the One.

A Question to Sit With

When have you felt safe even though things around you were uncertain?
