The One Who Takes Fear Away

ਜਿਨਿ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ॥
jin sayvi-aa nirbha-o sukh-daata.
Whoever serves the Fearless Lord, the Giver of Peace,
ਤਿਨਿ ਭਉ ਦੂਰਿ ਕੀਆ ਏਕੁ ਪਰਾਤਾ ॥
tin bha-o door kee-aa ayk paraataa.
is rid of all his fears; he knows the One Lord.
ਜੋ ਤੂ ਕਰਹਿ ਸੋਈ ਫੁਨਿ ਹੋਇ ॥
jo too karahi so-ee fun ho-ay.
Whatever You do, that alone comes to pass in the end.
ਮਾਰੈ ਨ ਰਾਖੈ ਦੂਜਾ ਕੋਇ ॥੨॥
maarai na raakhai doojaa ko-ay. ||2||
There is no other who can kill or protect us. ||2||

In plain words

Whoever serves the Fearless One, the Giver of peace, sends all fear far away and comes to know the One.

Whatever You do, that is what comes to pass.

No one else can strike us down or keep us safe.

When you know there is only One behind it all, there is nothing left to fear.
The deeper layer

Knowing there is only One takes fear away.

Jin sayvi-aa nirbhau sukh-daataa means "whoever serves the Fearless One, the Giver of peace." Nirbhau means without fear. It is one of the names of the One in the Mool Mantar, the opening lines of the Guru Granth Sahib. Sukh-daataa is the Giver of peace.

Tin bha-o door kee-aa ayk paraataa means "their fear is gone; they know the One." Then maarai na raakhai doojaa ko-ay: "there is no other who can destroy or protect."

Think of a shadow on your bedroom wall at night. It looks scary until you turn on the light and see it is only your coat. Fear shrinks the same way here. There is no second power to be afraid of. To serve here means to lean toward the One, to line up with the One.

A Question to Sit With

What is one fear you would like to hand over and set down?
