Sikhism·Raag Bhairao·Shabad 54
Verse 4 of 5

So I Sleep Without Worry

ਤਉ ਕੜੀਐ ਜੇ ਕਿਛੁ ਹੋਇ ਧਿਙਾਣੈ ॥
ta-o karhee-ai jay kichh ho-ay Dhinyaanai.
We should feel sad, if God were a tyrant.
ਤਉ ਕੜੀਐ ਜੇ ਭੂਲਿ ਰੰਞਾਣੈ ॥
ta-o karhee-ai jay bhool ranjaanay.
We should feel sad, if He made us suffer by mistake.
ਗੁਰਿ ਕਹਿਆ ਜੋ ਹੋਇ ਸਭੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੇ ॥
gur kahi-aa jo ho-ay sabh parabh tay.
The Guru says that whatever happens is all by God's Will.
ਤਬ ਕਾੜਾ ਛੋਡਿ ਅਚਿੰਤ ਹਮ ਸੋਤੇ ॥੩॥
tab kaarhaa chhod achint ham sotay. ||3||
So I have abandoned sadness, and I now sleep without anxiety. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

We would have reason to be sad if the One were a cruel ruler.

We would have reason to be sad if the One made us suffer by mistake.

The Guru has told me that everything that happens comes from the One.

So I have let go of sadness, and now I sleep without a worry.

Trust is what lets you finally put the worry down and rest.
The deeper layer

Whatever happens comes from the One, so you can set worry down and sleep in peace.

Achint sotay, "I sleep without anxiety," is one of Guru Arjan's most tender images. Trust shows up here as the ability to finally relax. The Guru's teaching, jo ho-ay sabh prabh tay, whatever happens is from the One, becomes, in the body, a good night's sleep.

A Question to Sit With

What would help you sleep with a lighter, quieter mind tonight?
