Without the Music, No Dance

ਭੈਰਉ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
bhairo mehlaa 5.
Bhairao, Fifth Mehl:
ਬਿਨੁ ਬਾਜੇ ਕੈਸੋ ਨਿਰਤਿਕਾਰੀ ॥
bin baajay kaiso nirtikaaree.
Without music, how is one to dance?
ਬਿਨੁ ਕੰਠੈ ਕੈਸੇ ਗਾਵਨਹਾਰੀ ॥
bin kanthai kaisay gaavanhaaree.
Without a voice, how is one to sing?
ਜੀਲ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੈਸੇ ਬਜੈ ਰਬਾਬ ॥
jeel binaa kaisay bajai rabaab.
Without strings, how is a guitar to be played?
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਬਿਰਥੇ ਸਭਿ ਕਾਜ ॥੧॥
naam binaa birthay sabh kaaj. ||1||
Without the Naam, all affairs are useless. ||1||

In plain words

Without music, how can anyone dance?

Without a voice, how can anyone sing?

Without strings, how can a rabaab, a kind of guitar, be played?

Without the Naam, everything you do comes to nothing.

The Naam is the string that lets your life ring.
The deeper layer

Without the Naam, a life is like a dance with no music: the shape is there, and the life is missing.

Bin baajay kaiso nirtikaaree: without music, how the dance? Jeel binaa kaisay bajai rabaab: without strings, how can the rabaab play? The rabaab is the instrument Guru Nanak's companion Mardana played. Each image shows an outward form waiting for the living thing that gives it sound. The Naam is the string that lets a life ring.

A Question to Sit With

What is something that feels empty until the one thing that matters is added to it?
