Who Ever Crossed Without It

ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਹਹੁ ਕੋ ਤਰਿਆ ॥
naam binaa kahhu ko tari-aa.
Without the Naam - tell me: who has ever been saved?
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੈਸੇ ਪਾਰਿ ਪਰਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
bin satgur kaisay paar pari-aa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Without the True Guru, how can anyone cross over to the other side? ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Without the Naam, tell me, who has ever been carried across?

Without the True Guru, how can anyone reach the other shore?

Everyone who made it across had something true to steer by.
The deeper layer

The Naam and the True Guru carry you across the wide river of life to the far shore.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the centre of the shabad. Naam binaa kahhu ko tari-aa: without the Naam, tell me, who has crossed? Paar pari-aa is the picture of reaching the far shore of the world-ocean. The question is a warm one: everyone who ever found their way had something true to steer by.

A Question to Sit With

Who is a guide who has helped you find your way?
