The Guide Who Cares for All

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਸਰਬ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲੈ ॥
satgur mayraa sarab paratipaalai.
My True Guru is the Sustainer and Cherisher of all.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਾਰਿ ਜੀਵਾਲੈ ॥
satgur mayraa maar jeevaalai.
My True Guru kills and revives.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮੇਰੇ ਕੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
satgur mayray kee vadi-aa-ee.
The glorious greatness of my True Guru,
ਪ੍ਰਗਟੁ ਭਈ ਹੈ ਸਭਨੀ ਥਾਈ ॥੨॥
pargat bha-ee hai sabhnee thaa-ee. ||2||
has become manifest everywhere. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

My True Guru looks after and cherishes everyone. My True Guru takes life and gives life back.

The greatness of my True Guru shows clearly in every place.

The same care that holds everything can bring the worn-out back to life.
The deeper layer

The True Guru cares for everyone, holds every ending and every new beginning, and shows everywhere.

Sarab pratipaalai: the Guru looks after everyone and cherishes them all, the way a parent feeds and cares for a family.

Maar jeevaalai means takes life and gives life back. It is the Guru's power over endings and new beginnings. A tired, worn-out heart can be turned around and filled with new life.

Think of a wilted plant that perks right up after a good drink of water.

Pargat bha-ee hai sabhnee thaa-ee: the Guru's greatness shows up everywhere. You just have to look.

A Question to Sit With

When did something you thought was ruined get a second life?
