Strength for the Weak

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਤਾਣੁ ਨਿਤਾਣੁ ॥

My True Guru is the power of the powerless.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਘਰਿ ਦੀਬਾਣੁ ॥
satgur mayraa ghar deebaan.
My True Guru is my home and court.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਹਉ ਸਦ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਇਆ ॥

I am forever a sacrifice to the True Guru.

pargat maarag jin kar dikhlaa-i-aa. ||3||
He has shown me the path. ||3||

In plain words

My True Guru is the strength of those with no strength. My True Guru is my home and my court, where I find support.

I give myself to the True Guru, always, for the Guru made the path plain and showed it to me.

When your own strength runs out, a true guide becomes it for you.
The deeper layer

When your strength runs out, the Guru is your strength, your home, and the one who shows you the way.

Taan nitaan means the strength of those with no strength. Guru Arjan says his true Guru is that strength. It is a promise for anyone who feels weak.

Ghar deebaan: the Guru is his ghar, his home, and his deebaan, the court where he finds support.

Bal jaa-i-aa means "I give myself to you." It's like saying, "I would give anything for you." Why? Pargat maarag jin kar dikhlaa-i-aa: the Guru showed him the path, plain and clear.

Think of being lost in a big store as a little kid. Then a hand takes yours and leads you back. You would never forget that hand.

A Question to Sit With

Who has shown you the way when you felt lost?
