Sikhism·Raag Bhairao·Shabad 61
Verse 3 of 5

Even the Lost Can Light Up

ਨਾਮੁ ਲੈਤ ਦੁਖੁ ਦੂਰਿ ਪਰਾਨਾ ॥
naam lait dukh door paraanaa.
Repeating the Naam, the mortal's pains are taken away.
ਨਾਮੁ ਲੈਤ ਅਤਿ ਮੂੜ ਸੁਗਿਆਨਾ ॥
naam lait at moorh sugi-aanaa.
Repeating the Naam, the most ignorant people become spiritual teachers.
ਨਾਮੁ ਲੈਤ ਪਰਗਟਿ ਉਜੀਆਰਾ ॥
naam lait pargat ujee-aaraa.
Repeating the Naam, the Divine Light blazes forth.
ਨਾਮੁ ਲੈਤ ਛੁਟੇ ਜੰਜਾਰਾ ॥੨॥
naam lait chhutay janjaaraa. ||2||
Repeating the Naam, one's bonds are broken. ||2||

In plain words

Remembering the Naam, pain runs far away. Remembering the Naam, even the most foolish become wise.

Remembering the Naam, a bright light shines out. Remembering the Naam, the tangles that tie me up come loose.

No one is too lost to light up.
The deeper layer

No one is too lost for the Naam to light them up.

Dukh door paraanaa: pain runs far off. At moorh sugi-aanaa: the most foolish become wise. No one is written off.

Pargat ujee-aaraa: a bright light shines out, the way dawn fills a room. Bhairao is a morning raag, full of that light. Chhutay janjaaraa: the tangles come loose, like a knotted necklace that finally slides free.

A Question to Sit With

When did something suddenly click for you that you thought you would never get?
