In plain words

O my friends and companions, my whole household is full of joy.

In kindness, my Husband, the Beloved One, has come to meet me.

When you feel met by what you longed for, your whole world brightens.
The deeper layer

When the Beloved comes to meet you, your whole house fills with joy.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad.

Sakhee sahayree mayrai garsat anand means "my friends, my home is full of joy." Sakhee sahayree are close friends. Garsat is the household, and anand is deep joy. The household here means the whole self: heart, mind and body, all at ease.

Kar kirpaa bhaytay mohi kant means "in kindness, my Beloved came and met me." Kant means husband, the Beloved. It is a tender picture of the One I had been longing for.

Think of a best friend who has been away all summer. When they finally knock on the door, the whole house feels bright and glad.

A Question to Sit With

What good news has ever filled your whole house with joy?
