A Priceless Jewel

ਨਾਮੁ ਰਤਨੁ ਮੇਰੈ ਭੰਡਾਰ ॥
naam ratan mayrai bhandaar.
The Jewel of the Naam is my treasure.
ਅਗਮ ਅਮੋਲਾ ਅਪਰ ਅਪਾਰ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
agam amolaa apar apaar. ||1|| rahaa-o.
It is inaccessible, priceless, infinite and incomparable. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The jewel of the Naam is my treasure.

It is beyond reach and beyond price, without end, and like nothing else.

The most valuable things are the ones no money could ever buy.
The deeper layer

The jewel of the Naam is a treasure beyond any price.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line. It is the center of the shabad. Naam ratan means the jewel of the Naam. Bhandaar means a treasure house. The Guru says his whole treasure is that one jewel.

Then he piles up words to describe it. Agam: beyond reach. Amolaa: beyond price. Apar apaar: without end, without limit. Why so many words? Because it is hard to say. Think of the things you love most, like a hug from your grandmother or laughing with your best friend. No store sells them. The best things are the ones no money could buy.

A Question to Sit With

What do you treasure that money could never buy?
