In plain words

You are my Father, and You are my Mother.

You are my soul and my breath of life, the Giver of peace.

You are my Master, and I am Your servant.

Without You, I have no one at all.

The deepest belonging feels like being fully someone's, and fully at peace.
The deeper layer

The One is Father and Mother to you, your life and breath, and the Giver of peace.

Too mayraa pitaa toohai mayraa maataa: You are my Father, You are my Mother. Guru Arjan names the One as both in a single line, so the One is never only one or the other. Jee-a paraan is soul and breath, life itself. Sukh-daataa is the Giver of peace.

Thaakur is Master, and daas is a servant, someone who belongs to the Master's house. Tujh bin avar nahee ko mayraa: without You, I have no one at all. Think of a small child holding a parent's hand in a busy crowd. That one hand is everything.

A Question to Sit With

Who are the people who make you feel completely held?
