Please bless me with Your Mercy, God, and give me this gift,

tumHree ustat kara-o din raat. ||1|| rahaa-o.
that I may sing Your Praises, day and night. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Be kind to me, O One, and give me this gift:

that I may sing Your praises, day and night.

Sometimes the best thing to ask for is simply more joy in the good.
The deeper layer

The one gift worth asking for is to sing the One's praises, day and night.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Kar kirpaa karahu prabh daat: be kind, and give me a gift. Ustat kara-o din raat: let me praise You day and night. The gift asked for is more devotion itself, which is its own reward.

Think of a child who loves to sing. Ask what they want most, and the answer is more time to sing.

A Question to Sit With

If you could ask for just one thing, what would it be?
