Verse 3 of 5

You Play, I Am the Instrument

ਹਮ ਤੇਰੇ ਜੰਤ ਤੂ ਬਜਾਵਨਹਾਰਾ ॥
ham tayray jant too bajaavanhaaraa.
I am Your musical instrument, and You are the Musician.
ਹਮ ਤੇਰੇ ਭਿਖਾਰੀ ਦਾਨੁ ਦੇਹਿ ਦਾਤਾਰਾ ॥
ham tayray bhikhaaree daan deh daataaraa.
I am Your beggar; please bless me with Your charity, O Great Giver.
ਤਉ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਰੰਗ ਰਸ ਮਾਣੇ ॥
ta-o parsaad rang ras maanay.
By Your Grace, I enjoy love and pleasures.
ਘਟ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਤੁਮਹਿ ਸਮਾਣੇ ॥੨॥
ghat ghat antar tumeh samaanay. ||2||
You are deep within each and every heart. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I am Your instrument, and You are the One who plays me.

I am Your beggar, standing with open hands; give me Your gift, O Great Giver.

By Your kindness, I enjoy love and every delight.

You live deep inside each and every heart.

Maybe the best music of your life is something playing through you.
The deeper layer

You are an instrument in the One's hands, and the One lives inside every heart.

Ham tayray jant too bajaavanhaaraa: I am Your instrument, You are the Player. A flute makes no music on its own; the player's breath makes it sing. The image fits Bhairao, a raag made to be sung.

Bhikhaaree is a beggar, someone who comes with open, empty hands. Daataaraa is the Great Giver who fills them. Rang ras is love and delight, enjoyed by the One's kindness. Ghat ghat antar: inside every heart, so the One lives in everyone alike.

A Question to Sit With

When have you felt like something good was flowing through you, not just from you?
