Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

By Your kindness, I chant the Naam.

In the Sangat, with holy people, I sing Your praises.

In Your mercy, You take away our pains.

By Your mercy, my heart opens like a lotus flower.

Kindness is the sunlight that opens a closed heart.
The deeper layer

The One's kindness brings the Naam to your lips and opens your heart like a lotus.

Japee-ai naa-o: chanting the Naam. Saadhsang is the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One — and that is where the singing happens. Darad binaas: pain taken away.

Kamal bigaas is the heart-lotus blossoming. A lotus opens its petals when the morning sun reaches it, which suits Bhairao, a raag of the dawn.

A Question to Sit With

What helps your heart open up when it has been closed?
