What Fear Feeds On

bharam bhayd bha-o kabahu na chhootas aavat jaat na jaanee.
Doubt, separation and fear are never eradicated, and the mortal continues coming and going in reincarnation, as long as he does not know the Lord.
Without the Name of the Lord, no one is liberated; they drown and die without water. ||2||

In plain words

Doubt, feeling separate, and fear never leave, and the coming and going goes on, as long as you do not know the One.

Without the Naam of the One, no one is set free. They drown and die, though there is no water at all.

Fear feeds on feeling separate, and the Naam brings you close.
The deeper layer

Doubt and fear keep circling until you know the One, and the Naam sets you free.

Bharam bhayd bha-o: doubt, feeling separate, and fear. Aavat jaat: coming and going, round and round through births and deaths. Doob mu-ay bin paanee: drowning without any water.

It is a strong picture. Think of feeling panicked on dry land, your chest tight as if you were underwater, though nothing around you is wet. Knowing the One, through the Naam, eases that feeling of being cut off.

A Question to Sit With

When you feel cut off from everyone, what reminds you that you're not?
