The Highest Task Of All

ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਿਓ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ॥
gur poorai darirha-o har naam.
The Perfect Guru has implanted the Naam within me.
ਸਭ ਤੇ ਊਤਮੁ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕਾਮੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
sabh tay ootam har har kaam. ||1|| rahaa-o.
The highest task of all is the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The perfect Guru has planted the One's Naam firmly in me.

The highest work of all is remembering the One, Har, Har.

Keeping the One in mind is the finest thing you can do.
The deeper layer

The Guru plants the Naam deep in you, and remembering the One is the highest work of all.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line. It is the center of the shabad. Darirha-o means planted firmly. Think of a seed pressed deep in the soil, so the wind can't blow it away. The Guru did that with the Naam.

Then: sabh tay ootam har har kaam. Of all the jobs a person can have, remembering the One is the highest. Homework, chores and practice all matter. But this one sits at the top of the list, and it can go along with all the others.

A Question to Sit With

What do you think is the most worthwhile thing a person can spend their life on?
