In plain words

First, I gave up speaking badly of others.

All the worry in my mind melted away.

I sent greed and clinging far off.

I see the One right here, close at hand, and I have become a great devotee.

A big change can start with one small kindness.
The deeper layer

Kindness comes first: stop speaking badly of others, and worry lifts.

Parathmay chhodee paraa-ee nindaa: "first, I gave up putting others down." Nindaa means slander, talking badly about someone. Then utar ga-ee sabh man kee chindaa: "all the worry in my mind lifted." Chindaa means worry.

Think of a backpack full of rocks. Each unkind thing we say about someone is one more rock. Put them down, and you walk lighter.

Next, lobh moh sabh keeno door: "greed and clinging were sent far away." Lobh is greed. Moh is clinging, holding on too tight. Then param baisno prabh paykh hajoor: "I see the One right here, close at hand, and I have become a great devotee." Hajoor means present, right here. The whole path begins with kindness to others.

If someone is being unkind to you or hurting you, that is never something you have to accept. Telling a grown-up you trust is always the right thing to do.

A Question to Sit With
