The Rare Art Of Letting Go

ਐਸੋ ਤਿਆਗੀ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਕੋਇ ॥

Such a renunciate is very rare.
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੈ ਜਨੁ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
har har naam japai jan so-ay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Such a humble servant chants the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Someone who lets go like this is rare.

Such a humble servant chants the Naam of the One, Har, Har.

Learning to let go is a rare and freeing art.
The deeper layer

Few people let go like this, and the ones who do keep the Naam.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the centre of the shabad. Aiso ti-aagee virlaa ko-ay means "such a person who lets go is very rare." Ti-aagee means someone who gives things up. Here it does not mean running away from the world. It means someone who has learned to let go, who walks through life unburdened.

Think of a kid who can lose a game, shake hands, and still enjoy the day. That kind of letting go is rare.

Har har naam japai jan so-ay means "that humble servant keeps repeating the Naam of the One." The lightness grows out of the Naam.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you are ready to let go of?
