Setting Down The Ego

ਅਹੰਬੁਧਿ ਕਾ ਛੋਡਿਆ ਸੰਗੁ ॥
ahaN-buDh kaa chhodi-aa sang.
I have forsaken my egotistical intellect.
ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਕਾ ਉਤਰਿਆ ਰੰਗੁ ॥
kaam kroDh kaa utri-aa rang.
The love of sexual desire and anger has vanished.
ਨਾਮ ਧਿਆਏ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰੇ ॥
naam Dhi-aa-ay har har haray.
I meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord, Har, Har.
ਸਾਧ ਜਨਾ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਨਿਸਤਰੇ ॥੨॥
saaDh janaa kai sang nistaray. ||2||
In the Company of the Holy, I am emancipated. ||2||

In plain words

I have left behind the proud, know-it-all mind.

The pull of craving and anger has faded.

I keep the Naam of the One in mind, Har, Har, Haray.

In the Sangat, the company of holy people, I am set free.

Setting down the know-it-all self makes room for freedom.
The deeper layer

When pride steps aside, anger and craving cool down.

Ahan-budh kaa chhodi-aa sang means "I let go of the proud mind." Ahan-budh is the ego-mind, the part that says "me first, I know best." Kaam krodh kaa utri-aa rang means "the pull of craving and anger faded." Kaam is strong craving. Krodh is anger.

Think of ego like a fever. It is something to heal, the way you rest and get better when you are sick.

Naam dhi-aa-ay har har haray means "I keep the Naam of the One in mind." And saadh janaa kai sang nistaray: "in the company of holy people, I am set free." That company is the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One — and freedom happens there.

A Question to Sit With

When has admitting you did not know something helped you?
