In plain words

Whoever the One keeps safe, in kindness, is the devotee who chants the Naam.

Nanak says: the one whose mind is lit up, who takes understanding from the Guru, is made whole and complete.

A lit-up mind makes a life feel whole.
The deeper layer

Grace comes first, and a whole life follows.

Kar kirpaa jis raakhai aap means "the one whom the One keeps, in kindness." Raakhai means keeps safe. So-ee bhagat japai naam jaap: "that devotee repeats the Naam." Bhagat is a devotee, someone who loves the One.

Man pargaas gur tay mat la-ee means "the mind is lit up, and understanding comes from the Guru." Pargaas is light. Mat is understanding.

Think of a lamp. First it has to be plugged in. Then it glows and lights up the room. Grace comes first and makes everything else possible. Kaho naanak taa kee pooree pa-ee means "Nanak says, that person's life is made whole." Pooree means full and complete.

A Question to Sit With

What is something that, once you understood it, made everything else make more sense?
