The Closed Heart Opens

ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਕੀ ਮਿਟੀ ਜਮ ਤ੍ਰਾਸ ॥

My fear of birth and death and the Messenger of Death has been dispelled.
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਊਂਧ ਕਮਲ ਬਿਗਾਸ ॥

In the Saadh Sangat, the inverted lotus of my heart has blossomed forth.

Singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, I have found eternal, abiding peace.

All my tasks are perfectly accomplished. ||3||

In plain words

My fear of birth and death has been wiped away.

In the Sangat, the upside-down lotus of my heart has turned up and bloomed.

Singing the One's praises, I have found a peace that stays.

All my tasks are done, whole and complete.

A heart that was shut tight can open and bloom.
The deeper layer

The fear of birth and death lifts, and the closed heart opens like a flower.

Janam maran kee mitee jam traas: the fear of birth and death, and of the jam, the messenger of death, has lifted. It is the fear of endings.

Saadhsangat oondh kamal bigaas: in the Sangat, the upside-down lotus of the heart turns up and blooms.

Think of a flower bud that has been shut all night. In the morning sun, it slowly opens.

Gun gaavat nihchal bisraam: singing the One's goodness, I find a steady peace. Nihchal means unshakable. Pooran ho-ay saglay kaam: all my tasks come out whole and complete.

A Question to Sit With

What helps your heart open up when it has been closed off?
