Repeating the Naam, the Name of the Lord, no obstacles block the way.

Listening to the Naam, the Messenger of Death runs far away.

Repeating the Naam, all pains vanish.
ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਹਰਿ ਚਰਣ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥੧॥

Chanting the Naam, the Lord's Lotus Feet dwell within. ||1||

In plain words

Saying the Naam, nothing blocks my way.

Hearing the Naam, the messenger of death runs far off. Saying the Naam, every pain is gone. Repeating the Naam, the feet of the One come to live in me.

Holding the Naam, the path ahead opens clear.
The deeper layer

With the Naam, the way is clear, pain goes, and the One comes to live inside you.

Naam lait kichh bighan na laagai: saying the Naam, no obstacle sticks. Naam sunat jam dhoorahu bhaagai: hearing the Naam, jam, the messenger of death, runs far away. Even the biggest fear of all keeps its distance. Naam lait sabh dookhah naas: every pain is wiped out. Naam japat har charan nivaas: the One's feet, the One's nearness, make a home inside.

Think of a hiking trail with fallen branches. Someone walks ahead and clears them, and the path opens all the way to the top.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you keep going when something in your way feels too big?
