Sikhism·Raag Bhairao·Shabad 85
Verse 3 of 5

Nothing Dark Gets a Grip

ਹਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਕਿਛੁ ਚਾਖੁ ਨ ਜੋਹੈ ॥
har simrat kichh chaakh na johai.
Meditating in remembrance on the Lord, the Eye of Death cannot see you.
ਹਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਦੈਤ ਦੇਉ ਨ ਪੋਹੈ ॥
har simrat dait day-o na pohai.
Meditating in remembrance on the Lord, demons and ghosts shall not touch you.
ਹਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਮੋਹੁ ਮਾਨੁ ਨ ਬਧੈ ॥
har simrat moh maan na baDhai.
Meditating in remembrance on the Lord, attachment and pride shall not bind you.
ਹਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਗਰਭ ਜੋਨਿ ਨ ਰੁਧੈ ॥੨॥
har simrat garabh jon na ruDhai. ||2||
Meditating in remembrance on the Lord, you shall not be consigned to the womb of reincarnation. ||2||

In plain words

Remembering the One, even the eye of death cannot find you.

Remembering the One, no demon or ghost can touch you. Remembering the One, clinging and pride cannot tie you up. Remembering the One, you are not sent round again from womb to womb.

Remembering the One keeps the scary shadows from getting a grip.
The deeper layer

Remember the One, and nothing dark can get a grip on you.

The verse repeats har simrat, "remembering the One," four times, like four steps up a staircase. Kichh chaakh na johai: no evil eye, not even the eye of death, can find you. Dait day-o na pohai: no demon or ghost can touch you. Those are the old pictures for the scary things in the dark. Moh maan na badhai: clinging and pride cannot tie you up. Garabh jon na rudhai: you are not shut into the womb again, going round from birth to birth.

Think of a night-light in a child's room. With it glowing, the shadows in the corners lose their power.
