Sikhism·Raag Bhairao·Shabad 85
Verse 4 of 5

Anyone, Any Time

ਹਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕੀ ਸਗਲੀ ਬੇਲਾ ॥
har simran kee saglee baylaa.
Any time is a good time to meditate in remembrance on the Lord.
ਹਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਨੁ ਬਹੁ ਮਾਹਿ ਇਕੇਲਾ ॥
har simran baho maahi ikaylaa.
Among the masses, only a few meditate in remembrance on the Lord.
ਜਾਤਿ ਅਜਾਤਿ ਜਪੈ ਜਨੁ ਕੋਇ ॥
jaat ajaat japai jan ko-ay.
Social class or no social class, anyone may meditate on the Lord.
ਜੋ ਜਾਪੈ ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥੩॥
jo jaapai tis kee gat ho-ay. ||3||
Whoever meditates on Him is emancipated. ||3||

In plain words

Every hour is a good hour to remember the One.

Among many people, only a few remember the One. High birth or low birth, anyone at all may repeat the Naam. Whoever repeats it is set free.

Remembering the One is open to anyone, at any time.
The deeper layer

Any time is the right time to remember the One, and anyone at all may do it.

Har simran kee saglee baylaa: every hour belongs to remembering the One. Har simran baho maahi ikaylaa: among the many, only one here and there remembers. Jaat ajaat japai jan ko-ay: of any caste or of none, any person may repeat the Naam. Jaat is the family group a person is born into, which some people use to rank each other. Here it counts for nothing. Jo jaapai tis kee gat ho-ay: whoever repeats it is set free.

Think of a public library. Anyone can walk in, any day, and take home a book.

A Question to Sit With

Why do you think it matters that something good is open to everyone equally?
