Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Don't be proud of your caste and background, you foolish, unthinking one!
So much wrongdoing grows out of this pride.
Pride in your background quietly grows into looking down on others — catch it early.
Pride in your caste or background is foolish, and a great deal of harm grows from it.
This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Jaat kaa garab na kar moorakh gavaaraa: don't be proud of your caste, foolish one — a sharp word meant to wake you up. Is garab tay chaleh bahut vikaaraa: many wrongs flow from this pride, like looking down on people and treating them unfairly. The pride is the problem, never any group of people.
A Question to Sit With
What's a small pride that, if it grew, could make you unkind?
