In plain words

There is only One. And the One is found by the True Guru's grace — a gift that is always here, waiting for an open heart.

The Creator has set a wonderful play in motion.

I hear the Word, the music that plays without any drum, always sounding.

Those who follow only their own minds are lost and confused, while those who turn to the Guru understand.

The Creator makes the cause behind every cause.

Life is one great unfolding play, and there is one Maker behind every part of it.
The deeper layer

The whole world is a wonderful play, and one Maker stands behind every cause in it.

Guru Amar Das begins the story of Prahlaad here, with the whole world as a play. tin kartai ik chalat upaa-i-aa — the Creator set one wonderful play in motion. Chalat means a play or a show. Inside it sounds the anhad banee, the unstruck music. It is a music no drum makes, always humming underneath everything.

The manmukh, the person facing only their own wants, misses it and feels lost. The gurmukh, the person facing the Guru's teaching, understands. Think of a movie: some people only watch the action, while others notice the music holding it all together. Behind every cause stands one Maker. From that still point, the story begins.

A Question to Sit With

When you feel wonder at how the world works, what does that wonder point you toward?
