Deep within my being, I meditate on the Word of the Guru's Shabad.

ha-o kabahu na chhoda-o har kaa naam. ||1|| rahaa-o.
I shall never forsake the Name of the Lord. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Deep inside me, I keep my mind on the Guru's Word.

I will never let go of the Naam of the One.

The steadiest thing you can carry is not in your hands but in your heart.
The deeper layer

Keep the Guru's Word deep inside you, and hold on to the Naam whatever happens.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the centre of the shabad. It steadies the whole story that follows.

gur kaa sabad mayrai antar Dhi-aan — I keep the Guru's word deep inside me. ha-o kabahu na chhoda-o har kaa naam — I will never let go of the Naam of the One.

Think of a small flashlight you keep in your pocket on a camping trip. Whatever happens, you have light. This is how the boy Prahlaad stands through every hard moment of the story: holding on, and keeping the Naam close.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you keep close inside you that helps you feel steady?
