Sikhism·Raag Bhairao·Shabad 95
Verse 11 of 14

The Word Of A Devotee Comes True

ਜੰਮਣੁ ਮਰਣਾ ਮੋਹੁ ਉਪਾਇਆ ॥
jaman marnaa moh upaa-i-aa.
He created birth, death and attachment.
ਆਵਣੁ ਜਾਣਾ ਕਰਤੈ ਲਿਖਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
aavan jaanaa kartai likh paa-i-aa.
The Creator has ordained coming and going in reincarnation.
ਪ੍ਰਹਲਾਦ ਕੈ ਕਾਰਜਿ ਹਰਿ ਆਪੁ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ॥
parahlaad kai kaaraj har aap dikhaa-i-aa.
For the sake of Prahlaad, the Lord Himself appeared.
ਭਗਤਾ ਕਾ ਬੋਲੁ ਆਗੈ ਆਇਆ ॥੧੦॥
bhagtaa kaa bol aagai aa-i-aa. ||10||
The word of the devotee came true. ||10||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The One made birth, death and the way we cling to things.

The Creator wrote in the coming and going of lives.

For Prahlaad's sake, the One appeared.

The devotee's word came true.

A heart that trusts completely finds its trust answered.
The deeper layer

The same One made the whole cycle of life.

jaman marnaa moh upaa-i-aa — the One made being born, passing away, and moh, the way we hold on to things. The coming and going of lives is written into the play by the Creator. It is not a threat. It is part of the wonderful play from the opening verse, like the seasons turning in a year.

And then: bhagtaa kaa bol aagai aa-i-aa — the word of the devotee came true. For Prahlaad's sake, the One showed up. What the boy had said all along turned out to be exactly right.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you trusted would work out, that turned out just as you hoped?
