Even Fierceness Softens For A Child

ਦੇਵ ਕੁਲੀ ਲਖਿਮੀ ਕਉ ਕਰਹਿ ਜੈਕਾਰੁ ॥
dayv kulee lakhimee ka-o karahi jaikaar.
The gods proclaimed the victory of Lakshmi, and said,
ਮਾਤਾ ਨਰਸਿੰਘ ਕਾ ਰੂਪੁ ਨਿਵਾਰੁ ॥
maataa narsingh kaa roop nivaar.
"O mother, make this form of the Man-lion disappear!"
ਲਖਿਮੀ ਭਉ ਕਰੈ ਨ ਸਾਕੈ ਜਾਇ ॥
lakhimee bha-o karai na saakai jaa-ay.
Lakshmi was afraid, and did not approach.

The humble servant Prahlaad came and fell at the Lord's Feet. ||11||

In plain words

The gods cheered for Lakshmi and said, “O Mother, make this man-lion form go away!”

Lakshmi was afraid and could not go near.

Prahlaad, the humble servant, came and bowed at the One's feet.

What looks fierce from the outside can be gentle to the one who comes with love.
The deeper layer

What frightens even the gods is gentle to a child who comes with love.

Dayv kulee lakhimee ka-o karahi jaikaar: the gods call out to Lakshmi, honored as the goddess of fortune in the older story. Maataa narsingh kaa roop nivaar: "Mother, make the fierce man-lion form go away!" Lakhimee bha-o karai na saakai jaa-ay: even Lakshmi is afraid and cannot go near.

Parahlaad jan charnee laagaa aa-ay: the child-devotee walks right up and bows at the One's feet. Think of a huge, growling dog that wags its tail the moment its own small child comes running.

A Question to Sit With

Has something that seemed scary from far away felt different once you came close with an open heart?
