Complaints That Came To Nothing

ਸੰਡੈ ਮਰਕੈ ਕੀਈ ਪੂਕਾਰ ॥
sandai markai kee-ee pookaar.
Sanda and Marka, his teachers, made the complaint.
ਸਭੇ ਦੈਤ ਰਹੇ ਝਖ ਮਾਰਿ ॥
sabhay dait rahay jhakh maar.
All the demons kept trying in vain.
ਭਗਤ ਜਨਾ ਕੀ ਪਤਿ ਰਾਖੈ ਸੋਈ ॥
bhagat janaa kee pat raakhai so-ee.
The Lord protected His humble devotee, and preserved his honor.
ਕੀਤੇ ਕੈ ਕਹਿਐ ਕਿਆ ਹੋਈ ॥੫॥
keetay kai kahi-ai ki-aa ho-ee. ||5||
What can be done by mere created beings? ||5||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Sanda and Marka, his teachers, made a complaint.

All the demons kept trying, and it came to nothing.

The One protected the humble devotee and kept his honor.

What can those who were made do against the One?

Nothing that is merely made can overpower the One who made everything.
The deeper layer

Prahlaad's teachers complain, and every effort against him fizzles out.

sandai markai kee-ee pookaar — Sanda and Marka, his teachers, carried their complaint higher. The verse calls those against him dait, demons. Here they are simply people whose efforts come to nothing: sabhay dait rahay jhakh maar, they all kept trying, in vain.

bhagat janaa kee pat raakhai so-ee — the One kept the devotee safe and kept his honor whole. What can anyone who was made do against the One who made them? Think of building a sand wall to hold back the tide.

A Question to Sit With

Who or what makes you feel safe when others are trying to scare or pressure you?
