Lucky Is The Blessed Hand

ਤਿਸੁ ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ਜਿਸੁ ਹਰਿ ਧਨੁ ਰਾਸਿ ॥
tis saalaahee jis har Dhan raas.
I praise that person, who has the capital of the Lord's Wealth.
ਸੋ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਜਿਸੁ ਗੁਰ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਹਾਥੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
so vadbhaagee jis gur mastak haath. ||1|| rahaa-o.
He is very fortunate, on whose forehead the Guru has placed His Hand. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I praise the one whose savings are the wealth of the One.

How lucky is the one on whose forehead the Guru has placed a hand.

Good fortune is nearness to what lasts.
The deeper layer

How lucky is the one the Guru has blessed, whose savings are the wealth of the One.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the centre of the shabad.

Tis saalaahee jis har dhan raas — I praise the one whose raas, whose savings, is the wealth of the One. So vadbhaagee jis gur mastak haath — lucky is the one on whose mastak, forehead, the Guru has placed a hand.

Picture a grandparent resting a warm hand on your head before you leave for school. You didn't earn that touch. It is simply given, out of love. That is what grace is like here. It is placed on you, not won. All the chorus lines of the song turn around this still center.

A Question to Sit With

When have you felt the quiet good fortune of being cared for by someone wiser?
