Free While Fully Alive

ਜਿਸੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਸੋ ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤਾ ॥
jis naam ridai so jeevan muktaa.
One who keeps the Naam in his heart is Jivan-mukta, liberated while yet alive.
ਜਿਸੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਭ ਹੀ ਜੁਗਤਾ ॥
jis naam ridai tis sabh hee jugtaa.
One who keeps the Naam in his heart knows all ways and means.
ਜਿਸੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਤਿਨਿ ਨਉ ਨਿਧਿ ਪਾਈ ॥
jis naam ridai tin na-o niDh paa-ee.
One who keeps the Naam in his heart obtains the nine treasures.
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਈ ॥੩॥
naam binaa bharam aavai jaa-ee. ||3||
Without the Naam, the mortal wanders, coming and going in reincarnation. ||3||

In plain words

The one who keeps the Naam in their heart is free while still alive.

The one who keeps the Naam in their heart knows every way through.

The one who keeps the Naam in their heart finds the nine treasures, everything a person needs.

Without the Naam, a person wanders in doubt, coming and going, born again and again.

Freedom can be lived right now, in an ordinary day.
The deeper layer

The Naam sets you free right now, in this life.

Jis naam ridai so jeevan muktaa — the one with the Naam in the heart is jeevan muktaa. That means free while still alive. Freedom here is not a prize waiting far off after this life. It is lived inside an ordinary day, at school, at home, at the dinner table.

Tis sabh hee jugtaa — they know every way through. Tin na-o nidh paa-ee — they find the na-o nidh, the nine treasures, which means everything a person needs.

Naam binaa bharam aavai jaa-ee — without the Naam, a person wanders in doubt, coming and going. In the old teaching, "coming and going" means being born again and again. It is like a game that keeps sending you back to the start.

A Question to Sit With

When do you feel most free in the middle of a normal day?
