Sikhism·Raag Bhairao·Shabad 97
Verse 5 of 9

Carefree And Never At A Loss

ਜਿਸੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਸੋ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹਾ ॥
jis naam ridai so vayparvaahaa.
One who keeps the Naam in his heart is carefree and independent.
ਜਿਸੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਦ ਹੀ ਲਾਹਾ ॥
jis naam ridai tis sad hee laahaa.
One who keeps the Naam in his heart always earns a profit.
ਜਿਸੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਵਡ ਪਰਵਾਰਾ ॥
jis naam ridai tis vad parvaaraa.
One who keeps the Naam in his heart has a large family.
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਗਾਵਾਰਾ ॥੪॥
naam binaa manmukh gaavaaraa. ||4||
Without the Naam, the mortal is just an ignorant, self-willed manmukh. ||4||

In plain words

The one who keeps the Naam in their heart is free of worry, leaning on no one.

The one who keeps the Naam in their heart always comes out ahead.

The one who keeps the Naam in their heart has a great big family.

Without the Naam, a person follows only their own mind and stays lost in not-knowing.

Remember what you carry inside, and you belong to a great big family.
The deeper layer

The Naam takes away worry and gives you a huge family.

Jis naam ridai so vayparvaahaa — the one with the Naam in the heart is vayparvaahaa, free of worry, needing no one's approval. Tis sad hee laahaa — they always come out ahead. Tis vad parvaaraa — they have a great big family.

Think of walking into a new school and finding friends in every class. You never feel alone.

Naam binaa manmukh gaavaaraa — without the Naam, a person is a manmukh, someone facing only their own wants, and stays lost in not-knowing. It is like forgetting the treasure you are already carrying in your own bag.

A Question to Sit With

Who or what reminds you that you belong to something bigger than yourself?
