More Virtues Than Can Be Counted

ਕੋਟਿ ਮਹਿਮਾ ਜਾ ਕੀ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਹੰਸ ॥
kot mahimaa jaa kee nirmal hans.
Millions of swan-souls sing His Immaculate Praises.
ਕੋਟਿ ਉਸਤਤਿ ਜਾ ਕੀ ਕਰਤ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੰਸ ॥
kot ustat jaa kee karat barahmans.
Millions of Brahma's sons sing His Praises.
ਕੋਟਿ ਪਰਲਉ ਓਪਤਿ ਨਿਮਖ ਮਾਹਿ ॥
kot parla-o opat nimakh maahi.
He creates and destroys millions, in an instant.
ਕੋਟਿ ਗੁਣਾ ਤੇਰੇ ਗਣੇ ਨ ਜਾਹਿ ॥੬॥
kot gunaa tayray ganay na jaahi. ||6||
Millions are Your Virtues, Lord - they cannot even be counted. ||6||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Millions of pure, swan-like souls sing the One's spotless glory.

Millions of Brahma's sons sing the One's praise.

In the blink of an eye, the One makes millions of worlds and brings millions to an end.

Millions are Your good qualities; they cannot be counted.

The One's good qualities are as countless as the stars — you could never finish naming them.
The deeper layer

The One's good qualities are more than anyone could count.

Millions of hans, pure swan-like souls, sing its glory. The swan is an old picture of a clear, pure heart. Millions of barahmans, the sons of Brahma, wise voices of old, praise it. In the blink of an eye, millions of worlds are made and come to an end.

That line carries wonder. Think of waves on a beach. They rise and fall all day, and the ocean stays calm. Worlds coming and going are like the breathing of creation. And the verse ends simply: its virtues cannot be counted.

A Question to Sit With

If you tried to list all the good things about someone you love, where would you even begin?
