In plain words

The True Guru has given me a gift.

The Guru has given me the priceless jewel of the One's Naam.

Now an easy, natural joy fills me, an endless, wonderful play.

Nanak says: the One has met me, all on its own, without my worrying for it.

The best gift is the one you receive with open hands.
The deeper layer

The Guru gave a gift that could never be bought.

Guru Arjan Dev, the fifth Guru, wrote this shabad and signs it with the name Nanak. "satgur mo ka-o keeno daan" — the true Guru gave me a gift. Daan means a gift given freely, not earned. The gift is the Naam, a jewel with no price.

One word is the key to this whole shabad: achint. It means "without worry or strain," happening all on its own. "sahj binod choj aanantaa" names an easy, playful, endless joy. The One is met not by straining, but by being open. It is like trying hard to fall asleep. The harder you push, the less it comes. When you relax, sleep simply arrives.

A Question to Sit With

When has something good come to you just when you stopped straining for it?
