Again And Again, The Song Draws Me Back

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਸਾਚੀ ॥
kaho naanak keerat har saachee.
Says Nanak, True is the Kirtan of the Lord's Praise.
ਬਹੁਰਿ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਤਿਸੁ ਸੰਗਿ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਚੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
bahur bahur tis sang man raachee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Again and again, my mind remains immersed in it. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Nanak says: true is the song of the One's praise.

Again and again, my mind soaks in it.

Some things you return to gladly, because they feel like home.
The deeper layer

The song of praise is true and lasting, and the heart keeps coming home to it.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the centre of the shabad, the still point the whole song circles back to. "kaho naanak keerat har saachee" — Nanak says the praise of the One is true. Keerat means praise in song, and saachee means real and lasting.

"bahur bahur tis sang man raachee" — again and again, my mind soaks in it. Think of your favorite chair at home. However far you go, you come back and sink into it. The whole song follows that pattern: the heart keeps coming home to the One.

A Question to Sit With

What do you find yourself happily returning to, again and again?
