I do not need an image, or incense, or perfume, or a lamp to find the One. He is already blossoming inside me, in every part, closer than close.
Nanak says: held close by the Beloved, I am happy, and the place where I rest has become beautiful.
You need nothing extra to find the One, because the One is already inside you.
Roop na Dhoop na ganDh na deepaa means no image, no incense, no perfume, no lamp. In many traditions, people use these things to help them pray. Guru Arjan says the heart of it is somewhere else. The One is ot pot ang ang sang ma-ulee, woven through and through, blossoming with me in every part of my body. Think of a hand-knit sweater. The color is not painted on top; it is in every stitch.
This is not about looking down on anyone's way of praying. It is a gentle reminder, for every tradition, that the outside things were never the point. And the good news is that the presence is already here.
The last line brings back the picture of the soul as a bride, loved by her Beloved. At neekee mayree banee khatolee means my resting place has become very beautiful. The heart where the One lives turns lovely.
Where do you look for something that was with you all along?
