Truth, contentment, compassion, Dharmic faith and purity - I have received these from the Teachings of the Saints.

Says Nanak, one who realizes this in his mind, achieves total understanding. ||2||4||90||

In plain words

Truth, contentment, kindness, right living, a clear heart. I picked these up from the ones who love the One, like gifts handed down.

Nanak says: whoever recognizes this inside themselves comes to a wide, clear understanding.

Good is contagious — it gets handed down.
The deeper layer

Five good gifts pass from person to person.

Sat santokh da-i-aa Dharam such — truth, contentment, kindness, right living and a clean heart. Santan tay ih mant la-ee — I received these from the teaching of the saints. Think of a family recipe, handed from grandmother to mother to child. Goodness moves the same way, hand to hand.

Then: kaho naanak jin manhu pachhaani-aa — says Nanak, whoever recognizes this in their own mind. Tin ka-o saglee sojh pa-ee — they come to a full, clear understanding. Sojh means understanding.

A Question to Sit With

What good habit did you catch from someone you admire?
