By What Way Do We Reach You?

ਕਿਤੁ ਬਿਧੀਐ ਕਿਤੁ ਸੰਜਮਿ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
kit biDhee-ai kit sanjam paa-ee-ai.
In what way, and by what discipline, is He obtained?
ਕਹੁ ਸੁਰਜਨ ਕਿਤੁ ਜੁਗਤੀ ਧਿਆਈਐ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
kaho surjan kit jugtee Dhi-aa-ee-ai. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Tell me, O good man, by what means can we meditate on Him? ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

By what path, with what practice, do we reach the One?

Tell me, kind friend, how can we hold the One in mind?

It is okay to simply ask how.
The deeper layer

Asking how is a good place to start.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad, an honest, open question. Kit biDhee-ai kit sanjam paa-ee-ai — in what way, and by what discipline, do we reach the One? Sanjam means self-control, a practice you keep at. Kaho surjan kit jugtee Dhi-aa-ee-ai — tell me, kind friend, what is the way to hold the One in mind?

Guru Arjan asks it plainly, like a student putting up a hand in class. The rest of the shabad gives the answer. It is good to ask real questions.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you would love an honest, simple answer to?
