Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I take shelter with the saints, and I serve the saints.

All the busy work, the ties and tangles, and every other worry have let go of me.

Serving the Guru's people loosens knots you did not know you were tied in.
The deeper layer

Serving holy people sets you free from tangles.

This is the Rahao, the pause line at the centre of the shabad. Sant saran sant tahal karee — I take shelter with the saints, and I serve them. Tahal is hands-on service, like setting out shoes or serving food in the langar. DhanDh banDh ar sagal janjaaro — busy work, ties and every tangle. Avar kaaj tay chhoot paree — I am free of all those other affairs. Think of a ball of tangled string that comes loose once you stop pulling at it. Serving is the doorway out.

A Question to Sit With

What helps your worries loosen their grip?
