The One Gift I Ask For

||2||15||101||
May I never forget You from my heart; slave Nanak prays for this blessing. ||2||15||101||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Nanak says: may I always keep You in my heart — that is the single gift I ask for.

The best thing to ask for is to never lose sight of what matters most.
The deeper layer

One gift is enough: to keep the One in the heart always.

Kabhoo na bisrai hee-ay moray tay — may You never leave my heart. In plain words: may I always remember You.

Naanak daas ihee daan mangaa — Nanak, Your servant, asks for this one gift. Daan means a gift.

Think of a birthday wish list with just one line on it. Everything else can wait. The singer asks only to keep the One close, because every other good thing grows from that.

A Question to Sit With

If you could ask for just one thing to keep, what would it be?
