Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Here and hereafter, the mighty Guru keeps me safe.

The Supreme One has set this world and the next in good order, and all my tasks come out complete.

Feeling safe in one place makes it easier to be brave everywhere.
The deeper layer

The Guru keeps us safe, here and beyond.

It is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the one the shabad turns on. Dovai thaav rakhay gur sooray — the brave Guru protects me in both places. Halat palat means "this world and the next." Paarbarahm savaaray — the Supreme One sets both in good order.

Kaaraj ho-ay saglay pooray — and all my tasks come out whole. Think of a parent who walks you to school and is also there at pick-up. You are held at both ends of the day.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you feel safe enough to be brave?
