Kindness Is the Lasting Wealth

ਅਨਿਕ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਰ ਭੋਜਨ ਨਿਤ ਖਾਤੇ ਮੁਖ ਦੰਤਾ ਘਸਿ ਖੀਨ ਖਇਆ ॥
anik parkaar bhojan nit khaatay mukh dantaa ghas kheen kha-i-aa.
Continually eating all sorts of foods, the teeth in your mouth crumble, decay and fall out.
ਮੇਰੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਮੂਠਉ ਪਾਪ ਕਰਤ ਨਹ ਪਰੀ ਦਇਆ ॥੧॥
mayree mayree kar kar mooth-o paap karat nah paree da-i-aa. ||1||
Living in egotism and possessiveness, you are deluded; committing sins, you have no kindness for others. ||1||

In plain words

We eat every kind of food, day after day, and the teeth in our mouths wear thin with the years.

Saying "mine, mine" over and over, we lose our way; doing wrong, we find no room to be kind.

Holding on to "mine" leaves no room for kindness.
The deeper layer

Holding tight to "mine" slowly squeezes out kindness.

Anik parkaar bhojan nit khaatay — eating every kind of food, every day, while the body slowly wears, even the teeth. That wearing is simply how bodies work.

Mayree mayree kar kar mooth-o — saying "mine, mine" again and again, a person gets fooled. Nah paree da-i-aa — no room is left for kindness. Picture a fist clenched around a toy: it cannot open to share or to take a friend's hand. Ego is a habit, and habits can soften.

A Question to Sit With

When you feel very focused on what is yours, how can you remember to be kind?
