Sikhism·Raag Bilaaval·Shabad 146
Verse 2 of 3

The Bee and the Lotus

aahay man avar na bhaavai charnaavai charnaavai uljhi-o al makrand kamal ji-o.
My mind longs for Him, and does not love any other. I am totally absorbed, in love with His Lotus Feet, like the bumble bee attached to the honey of the lotus flower.
ਅਨ ਰਸ ਨਹੀ ਚਾਹੈ ਏਕੈ ਹਰਿ ਲਾਹੈ ॥੧॥
an ras nahee chaahai aykai har laahai. ||1||
I do not desire any other taste; I seek only the One Lord. ||1||

In plain words

My heart has found what it was looking for, and now nothing else pulls at it the way this does.

I am like a bumblebee that has crawled deep into a flower for its sweetness -- happy, wrapped up, wanting no other taste in the whole world.

Once you taste something sweet and good, the cheaper flavors lose their pull.
The deeper layer

The heart has found its sweetness and wants nothing else.

Aahay man avar na bhaavai — my mind longs for the One and loves no other. The verse pictures an al, a bumblebee, lost in the makrand, the honey, of a kamal, a lotus flower. The bee is not bored or pushed. It stays because it is happy there.

An ras nahee chaahai — I do not want any other taste. Think of a favorite dish at home. Once you have tasted it, the snacks in the vending machine stop calling you. That is how love for the One pulls at the heart.

A Question to Sit With

Is there something you love so much that, while you are doing it, nothing else can distract you?
