Verse 3 of 3

No Other, None Other

ਅਨ ਤੇ ਟੂਟੀਐ ਰਿਖ ਤੇ ਛੂਟੀਐ ॥
an tay tootee-ai rikh tay chhootee-ai.
I have broken away from the others, and I have been released from the Messenger of Death.
ਮਨ ਹਰਿ ਰਸ ਘੂਟੀਐ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਉਲਟੀਐ ॥
man har ras ghootee-ai sang saaDhoo ultee-ai.
O mind, drink in the subtle essence of the Lord; join the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, and turn away from the world.
ਅਨ ਨਾਹੀ ਨਾਹੀ ਰੇ ॥
an naahee naahee ray.
There is no other, none other than the Lord.
ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਚਰਨ ਚਰਨ ਹੇ ॥੨॥੨॥੧੨੯॥
naanak pareet charan charan hay. ||2||2||129||
O Nanak, love the Feet, the Feet of the Lord. ||2||2||129||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I have let go of the thousand small things that used to tug me in every direction, and with that letting-go, even the fear of endings loosens its grip.

Drink in this quiet sweetness, my heart; join the Sangat, and turn gently homeward. There is no other, none other. Nanak says, love the One's feet, the One's feet alone.

Let go of chasing everything, and you find the one thing worth holding.
The deeper layer

Let go of the rest, and love the One.

An tay tootee-ai — I have broken away from the others, the thousand small things that tug at me. Rikh tay chhootee-ai — and I am set free from the fear of coming and going.

Man har ras ghootee-ai — O mind, sip the sweetness of the One. Sang saaDhoo ultee-ai — in the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One — turn back and face homeward. Think of turning your chair away from a noisy TV to face a friend who is talking to you.

An naahee naahee ray — there is no other, none other. That repeat is the heartbeat of the shabad. Naanak pareet charan charan hay — Nanak's last line is simply love for the feet of the One.

A Question to Sit With

What are some of the many things that pull your attention in different directions?
